Umberg/Zipser Included in the 2017 Civic 50 Orange County List

Corporate Counsel Again Rank Umberg/Zipser as a Top Litigation Firm in BTI Litigation Outlook 2018

Tom Umberg Named to the “OC 500” by Orange County Business Journal

Umberg/Zipser is proud to announce that co-founding partner Thomas J. Umberg has been selected by the Orange County Business Journal for the 2017 edition of “OC 500 Directory of Influence.”  This list honors the most influential individuals from throughout Orange County. Honorees range from top executives at the largest publicly traded or privately held companies to up-and-comers, as well as a diverse group of governmental, philanthropic, religious and other civic representatives who contribute to the community of business.

Tom Umberg has extensive trial experience in both federal and state courts. He has successfully tried over 100 cases to verdict or judgment; including complex matters involving health care, real estate, work place harassment, construction defects, employee pension plans, etc.  As a federal criminal prosecutor, he tried numerous white collar and civil rights cases, including tax evasion schemes. These include “Uranium for Tax Dollars,” “Marco Numismatics” (a nationwide fraud on seniors), and the “Westminster Cross Burning” cases. He has also been selected for the prestigious publication “The Best Lawyers in America®” in commercial litigation for 10 consecutive years.  Tom is a retired Army Colonel, veteran of Afghanistan, and Bronze Star recipient.

Dean Zipser Provides Commentary in OCBJ Article on the Evolving Business Models of Patent Enforcement Companies

The Orange County Business Journal recently asked a few experts in intellectual property law about the changing landscape for patent enforcement firms.  In the article, Dean Zipser commented on the recent changes in the law, noting that “IP litigation and patent litigation never go out of vogue. Mei Tsang Presents in B2C eCommerce Workshop

Umberg/Zipser partner Mei Tsang participated at the B2C eCommerce Workshop hosted by U.S. Commercial Service of Orange County and the Women in International Trade on Reach Global Customers Through E-Commerce on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 in Costa Mesa, California.

Mei presented alongside speakers from Earth Friendly Products, Jordana Cosmetics, iGlobal Stores and JD.com as well as James Bledsoe, Director of the U.S. Commercial Service eCommerce Innovation Lab and China marketing expert Ann Bierbower.  The workshop focused on selling direct to global consumers through eCommerce, featuring different online sales options, marketing and mechanics as well as the logistics needed to support eCommerce sales.

Mei has an international intellectual property practice focused on helping clients formulate their IP strategy, and shepherding their IP through various business cycles to achieve their business goals worldwide.  Mei has substantial experience in patent and trademark portfolio development, and in all aspects of IP enforcement, including negotiation, licensing, and litigation at various courts at the federal, state, and administrative levels.  Her clients also depend on her multicultural background and language abilities (Mandarin and Cantonese) to help them expand and navigate their IP strategy worldwide.

Scott Garner Presents at the ABTL Annual Seminar

Umberg/Zipser partner Scott B. Garner participated in a panel at the Association of Business Trial Lawyers’ (ABTL) 44th Annual Seminar on October 5-8, 2017 in Carlsbad, California. Garner presented on professional liability issues for law firms: When Your Own Law Firm is in Crisis. Click here for more information about the event.

Garner represents clients in a wide array of complex business litigation matters with a focus on professional liability disputes and ethics counseling.  He has represented large, mid-size, and small law firms, along with individual lawyers, in pre-litigation and litigation disputes concerning claims of legal malpractice, ethical violations, and securities fraud arising from their litigation, transactional, and IP practices.  Garner also consults with clients on legal ethics issues, and has served as an expert witness on ethics and standard of care issues.

Umberg/Zipser attorneys are long-time supporters of ABTL and all the firm’s lawyers are members. Dean Zipser is a former ABTL Orange County Chapter President and Garner is the Immediate Past President of the Chapter. Adina Stowell, in addition to serving on the Board, is a former editor of the newsletter, and Carole Reagan is a former member of the newsletter’s editorial board. Dean Zipser Participates in ABTL Panel

Dean Zipser recently participated in an Association of Business Trial Lawyers (ABTL) Panel “Charting a Path to the Bench: A Panel Discussion About Things You Might Want to Know.” Dean is a former president of the Orange County chapter of ABTL and the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA). Other panelists included Assistant Presiding Judge Kirk Nakamura and Judge Melissa McCormick of the Orange County Superior Court, and Kimberly Knill, research attorney at the California Court of Appeal and former chair of the JNE Commission.
