Project Youth’s Annual Meeting Event

Mark was sworn in on Tuesday evening at Project Youth’s Annual Meeting and Society of Fellows Recognition Reception held at The Boardwalk in Irvine. U/Z partner, Dean Zipser, who has served as a board member for approximately 15 years, was sworn in as a member of Project Youth’s Emeritus Board. Project Youth OCBF has a long and successful history of offering programs directed to juvenile crime diversion, educational mentoring, health education, substance abuse treatment, and mental health services. OCAABA serves this diverse county by mentoring local law students, promoting diversity in the private and public sectors, organizing and volunteering for legal clinics for low income and disadvantaged communities, and supporting causes which affect and advancing the needs of Asian Pacific Americans and the public at large. The organization’s committees organize events throughout the year and provide opportunities for members to become more involved in OCAABA and local communities.

Partner Mei Tsang Elected as Secretary of the OCBA

Umberg/Zipser LLP (U/Z) is proud to announce partner Mei Tsang has been elected Secretary of the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA.) Mei has served on the Board of Directors of both the OCBA and the Orange County Bar Association Charitable Fund (OCBACF), the charitable wing of the OCBA for several years. Mei also co-chairs OCBA’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, and as former chair of the Intellectual Property and Technology Section.

“I am honored to be elected as the 2022 OCBA Secretary, and I look forward to continuing to serve this great organization with the mission of enhancing the system of justice and promoting equal justice for all,” says Mei.

The firm continues to play a major role with the OCBA. Partner Scott B. Garner is the Immediate Past President of OCBA, and currently serves as the 2021 President of the OCBACF.

U/Z’s co-founding partner Dean J. Zipser has also previously served as OCBA President, and received the Franklin G. West Award in 2017, an honor given annually to an attorney or judge in recognition of lifetime achievements that have advanced justice and the law.

Umberg/Zipser Continues Strong Commitment to Public Law Center Orange County

Umberg/Zipser continues to be a proud supporter of the Public Law Center (PLC) Orange County and again sponsored this year’s Volunteers for Justice Annual Dinner held June 3, 2019. Umberg/Zipser partner Carole E. Reagan has been a member of the board of directors of PLC for the past 18 years, and also serves on PLC’s Executive Committee. Leah A. Hamlin served on the Silent Auction Committee for the event. 

PLC, Orange County’s pro bono law firm, is committed to providing access to justice for low-income and vulnerable residents. Scott Garner and Mei Tsang Sworn in at OCBA Judges’ Night

The Orange County Bar Association’s (OCBA) annual Board of Directors election results are in and Umberg/Zipser (U/Z) is again featured prominently. Scott B. Garner was voted in as President-Elect and partner Mei Tsang was re-elected to the OCBA Board of Directors.

The 2019 Officers and Board members were installed along with the OCBA Charitable Fund’s Board of Directors on Friday, January 25, 2019, during the OCBA Judges’ Night & Annual Meeting.

Scott Garner, who will serve as President of OCBA in 2020, currently serves as the OCBA Treasurer, as an officer of the Orange County Bar Association Charitable Fund (OCBACF), and as co-chair of the OCBA Professionalism and Ethics Committee.

Mei Tsang recently served as co-chair for the OCBACF annual Raise Your Glass event, currently serves on the Board of Directors for both the OCBA and the OCBACF, and co-chairs OCBA’s Diversity Committee.

Dean Zipser also participated in the OCBA past president “passing the gavel” ceremony at the event.

Scott’s and Mei’s election is part of a long history of service by the firm’s lawyers.  For example, Umberg/Zipser co-founding partner Dean Zipser, is a former OCBA President and a former Chair of OCBA’s Masters Division – OCBA’s arm serving those in practice 25 years or more.   In 2017, Dean was the recipient of the OCBA’s highest honor, the Franklin G. Tom Umberg Again Named to the “OC 500” by Orange County Business Journal

Umberg/Zipser is pleased to announce that co-founding partner Thomas J. Umberg has been selected again for the Orange County Business Journal’s “OC 500 Directory of Influence” in 2018. This list honors the most influential individuals from throughout Orange County. Honorees range from top executives at the largest publicly traded or privately held companies to up-and-comers, as well as a diverse group of governmental, philanthropic, religious and other civic representatives who contribute to the community of business.

Tom Umberg has extensive trial experience in both federal and state courts. He has successfully tried over 100 cases to verdict or judgment; including complex matters involving health care, real estate, work place harassment, construction defects, employee pension plans, etc. As a federal criminal prosecutor, he tried numerous white collar and civil rights cases, including tax evasion schemes. Tom has been selected for the prestigious publication “The Best Lawyers in America®” in commercial litigation for 11 consecutive years. He is a retired Army Colonel, veteran of Afghanistan, and Bronze Star recipient.

Dean Zipser, Scott Garner and Todd Smith Present at OCBA Corporate Counsel Section Meeting – The Rules, They Are A-Changing: California’s New Rules of Professional Conduct

Umberg/Zipser (U/Z) attorneys Dean J. Zipser, Scott B. Garner and Todd W. Smith presented at the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA) Corporate Counsel Section Meeting, “The Rules, They Are A-Changing: California’s New Rules of Professional Conduct” on September 11, 2018. The program discussed the new Rules of Professional Conduct, which will go into effect November 1, 2018. Dean, Scott and Todd focused their discussion on the more significant changes to the existing rules and some notable new rules, including the conflict of interest rules, ethical screens, communication with clients, and discrimination.

Dean served as the co-vice-chair of the California State Bar Commission for the Revision of the Rules of Professional Conduct. Scott served as a member of the California State Bar’s Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct from 2011-2016, serving as the Committee’s Chair from 2014-15. Both Scott and Todd have decades of experience representing lawyers and law firms in professional liability related matters, and each of them has presented a number of Continuing Legal Education courses on legal ethics and professional responsibility issues.
