Umberg/Zipser LLP Named One of Orange County’s “2023 Best Places to Work” By Orange County Business Journal

IRVINE, Calif. – July 5, 2023 – Umberg/Zipser LLP, a premier business litigation and intellectual property law firm, has again been named one of the Best Places to Work in Orange County by the Orange County Business Journal (OCBJ). The awards program was created in 2009, and it is a project of the OCBJ in partnership with Workforce Research Group. This county-wide survey and awards program were designed to identify, recognize, and honor the best places of employment in Orange County, California, benefiting the county’s economy, its workforce, and businesses.

The program features an extensive two-part survey and audit process. The first portion consisted of an evaluation of each employer’s workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 20% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 80% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top organizations and the final ranking. Workforce Research Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Orange County and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final ranking.

The rankings of the winning organizations were released in a special section of the Orange County Business Journal’s July 3rd issue.

Priti Phukan, Ph.D. Promoted to Partner

Priti is experienced in drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications within the complex life sciences and biologics sectors/industries. Her expansive knowledge of the healthcare sectors includes bioinformatics, viral and cancer vaccines, cell therapy, immunotherapy, antibodies, drug delivery, food technology, peptide chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

She also received a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Washington, Seattle, and she holds a Bachelor of Science in physical chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, India.

Umberg/Zipser LLP Wins $47 Million Jury Verdict After Lengthy Trial

Umberg/Zipser LLP (U/Z) located in Irvine, CA and on behalf its client, John Park, won a $47 million jury verdict on February 3, 2022, Sonoma County Superior Court, Case No. SCV-259791. Mr. Park sued the defendant Tracey Buck-Walsh for intentional interference with contractual relations and breach of fiduciary duty.

After a lengthy trial that began on November 19, 2021, a Sonoma County jury found in favor of Mr. Park on both causes of action. Mr. Park was awarded with a verdict of $47,407,070.00 in compensatory damages. The jury also found that the defendant acted with malice, oppression, or fraud in interfering with Mr. Park’s contract and in breaching her fiduciary duties. However, the trial could not proceed to the punitive damages phase due to COVID-19 related issues.

“On behalf of the firm, we are thrilled at this great result for our client, John Park. Mr. Park is a brilliant entrepreneur and philanthropist. We were proud that he trusted us to seek justice for Ms. Buck-Walsh’s interference with his contract and breach of her fiduciary duty. Kudos to our entire team who worked tirelessly on this matter over five years, including the lengthy trial,” noted Dean Zipser, the firm’s managing partner. “It was very challenging bringing a complex trial to verdict during the COVID-19 pandemic. But thanks to the Court’s planning and precautions, the dedication of the jurors, and, of course, the hard work and flexibility of our team, we were able to bring the trial to a successful conclusion.”

Mr. Park added, “I am elated by the jury verdict and its damage award. I knew I was in great hands from the moment I hired my legal counsel. They were on top of the case from the outset and are superb strategists and trial lawyers. The firm and its attorneys always went the extra mile and their superb work product paid off.”
