Tom Umberg Sworn into California’s Judicial Council

Umberg/Zipser LLP co-founding partner, California State Senator and Chair of the California Senate Judiciary Committee Thomas J. Umberg was sworn into the Judicial Council by Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye during a virtual ceremony on Friday, January 22, 2021.

The Judicial Council is the policymaking body of the California courts, the largest court system in the nation. Under the leadership of the Chief Justice and in accordance with the California Constitution, the council is responsible for ensuring the consistent, independent, impartial, and accessible administration of justice.

Umberg stated, “I am honored to have the opportunity to work alongside other members of the Judicial Council to advance the consistent, impartial, independent, and accessible administration of justice. ”

Tom Umberg Elected as California State Senator for the 34th District

Umberg/Zipser (U/Z) is pleased to announce that co-founding partner Thomas J. Umberg has been elected to the California State Senate 34th District.

In his role as State Senator and one of the few practicing lawyers in the legislature, Tom will serve the citizens of the 34th District, which encompasses various parts of Los Angeles County and Orange County. Prior to being elected, Tom was a U.S. Army Colonel, Federal Prosecutor and U.S. Drug Czar under President Bill Clinton. During his term, Tom will remain a key member of the Umberg/Zipser team.

Co-founding partner Dean Zipser remarked, “We congratulate Tom on his election victory. Tom’s leadership and commitment to our community and country has been an integral part of the success of our firm. We wish him every success as State Senator.”

Tom is a seasoned trial lawyer who has successfully tried over 100 cases to verdict or judgment, combined with extensive experience in the public sector. He is active in the community and serves on the board of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals and is Chair of the Veterans Treatment Court Committee. During his military career, Tom served in Korea and Afghanistan, was awarded the Bronze Star and served as a JAG officer trying felony cases and attacking corruption. He has been selected as a “Best Lawyer” for the prestigious publication “The Best Lawyers in America®” in Commercial Litigation for 11 consecutive years.

Thomas Umberg Provides Commentary in OCBJ Cover Story “The Executive v. The Ballplayer”

Trial attorney and co-founding partner Thomas J. Umberg recently commented in the Orange County Business Journal article “The Executive v. The Ballplayer” discussing alleged inside trading of Advanced Medical Optics prior to being acquired by Abbott Laboratories. In the article, Tom stated that this particular jury case is “really unusual for several reasons. One reason is you have the witness whose testimony is contrary to the earlier trial and you’re asking a jury to believe the more recent testimony.”

Tom Umberg Selected as Chair of Justice For Vets Project

Umberg Zipser LLP is proud to announce that co-founding partner Thomas J. Umberg has been selected as Chair of the Veterans Treatment Court Committee for the “Justice For Vets” project.

“Tom’s service as a retired Army Colonel, veteran of Afghanistan, Bronze Star recipient, and Deputy Drug Czar under General Barry McCaffrey — make him the perfect choice to lead this critical nationwide effort,” said Orange County Superior Court Judge Lon Hurwitz.

Justice for Vets is dedicated to transforming the way the justice system identifies, assesses and treats our veterans, leading the national effort to put a Veterans Treatment Court in reach of every veteran in need. They are committed to ensuring that no veteran is left behind by providing training and technical assistance to help communities bring together local, state, and federal resources to directly serve veterans involved in the justice system due to mental health disorders, trauma, and substance use. Justice For Vets has helped establish over 200 veterans treatment courts and trained over 3,000 court staff. In addition, Justice For Vets has conducted 16 volunteer veteran mentor boot camp training, serving 1,000 veteran mentors representing 125 communities across 30 states.
