Umberg/Zipser is pleased to announce that Mei Tsang and Ryan Dean have joined the firm as partners.
Mei and Ryan work with companies of all sizes – from small businesses to Fortune 500 institutions — both domestically and internationally. Mei has an international intellectual property practice focused on helping clients formulate their IP strategy, and shepherding their IP through various business cycles to achieve their business goals worldwide. Mei has substantial experience in patent and trademark portfolio development, and in all aspects of IP enforcement, including negotiation, licensing, and litigation at various courts at the federal, state, and administrative levels. Her clients also depend on her multicultural background and language abilities (Mandarin and Cantonese) to help them expand and navigate their IP strategy worldwide.
Ryan specializes in global patent and trademark prosecution for clients of all sizes, and focuses primarily in the areas of mechanical and aerospace engineering, process engineering, household and consumer products, medical devices, and fluid conditioning systems. He also has substantial experience with licensing, defense and enforcement of both patents and trademarks, including at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in Federal Court. Ryan manages portfolio development for domestic and international clients, developing tailored strategies to best protect clients’ intellectual property while providing clients with cost certainty. Ryan has led global enforcement efforts in the U.S., Europe, Japan, China and other countries around the world.
“I have known Mei for many years and have always been impressed with the depth of her IP experience and expertise, her devotion to her clients, and her professional service,” said Dean Zipser. “Mei and I have worked together on various professional and community matters; doing client work together is a natural transition for us.”
“With their deep experience with patent and trademark prosecution and licensing, Mei and Ryan will strengthen the firm’s IP litigation practice – which has always been one of our core areas of focus – and helps meet our clients’ needs to identify, procure, and shepherd their IP rights,” added Tom Umberg.
Like the others at U/Z, both Mei and Ryan are actively involved in a number of professional organizations. For example, Mei serves on the Board of Directors for both the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA) and its Charitable Fund, and Ryan is a past chair of OCBA’s IP and Technology Section. Both Mei and Ryan are heavily involved with and subcommittees of the International Trademark Association (INTA). In addition, Mei is involved with a host of other organizations, including serving as an executive council member for the Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and a board member of the non-profit institution, The Portal.
Mei commented that “I have known and respected the Umberg/Zipser attorneys for many years and their impeccable reputation for excellence and in tirelessly serving the community. Dean and Tom are amazing lawyers and business solutionists. We look forward to collaborating with them to combine our IP expertise with complex business issues. We felt that joining the firm gives us the opportunity to offer our clients expanded solutions and expertise.”
Mei added: “We also came here for the firm’s culture, embodied by all of its attorneys, that incorporates all of the values Ryan and I believe in — teamwork, integrity, professionalism, creativity, and passion for helping the community. It’s no surprise that the Umberg/Zipser lawyers are such a solid and respected team and have had such a significant and impactful involvement in building bridges in our community. Ryan and I are tremendously excited to be joining such a dynamic and collaborative team of lawyers.”
